Blueberries Ripening!

We're going to be open Saturday, June 14, for raspberry and blueberry picking. The leading berries look really pretty. There are Collins, Bluejay, Duke, and the leaders on the Blueray varieties of blueberries.

The raspberries look like their big yield will be in one more week. There are a lot of green berries on and a few that are red. There won't be an abundance tomorrow, but some will be ready to pick.  Our hours are 7 am to 2 pm or whenever the blue gets picked off.

Next week we're planning on being open Tuesday and Saturday for sure, unless we get rained out on Tuesday!  If the crop looks heavy we may open for picking an additional day.

We're going to be open for blueberry and raspberry picking on Tuesday, June 11th.  Les just looked out in the field and saw that the leading berries on the bluejay and the duke are blue.  They are just beginning, so there isn't a huge amount, but they're coming on!

Saturday, June 15th, is the next date that we plan to be open for picking.

We'll be open from 7:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. or until the blue gets picked!

Raspberries!

Our red raspberries have just begun to ripen, so we're planning to be open on Saturday, June 8th, for raspberry picking.  There isn't a huge quantity yet; just the first few leading berries are ripe, but this means that the season for berry picking is on its way!

We're planning to open for blueberry picking on June 15th.  A few leading berries on our first variety are beginning to turn colors, but they aren't blue through and through yet.  Hopefully one more week will give them time to sweeten and turn completely blue on all sides.

This is the latest season that we've ever had following the year that was the earliest season on record.  We were picking raspberries in April last year!

2013 Berry Season in the Works!

We've had a busy weekend mowing, plowing, weeding, and preparing for this year's blueberry season. Last year our berries were about 4 weeks early and it looks like this year's crop is going to be 2 weeks late.

The raspberries are blooming and have small green berries that should begin to ripen by the end of May or the first part of June.  The blueberries are finished blooming and should begin to ripen with the Collins variety in mid-June.  The blackberries are currently in full bloom.

I'm so glad that warm weather is here!  Just 8 more days of school and I'll be ready to enjoy summer time around the clock.

Last Days

There are still a few blueberries and blackberries to pick, so we're going to be open Tuesday, June 19, and Saturday, June 23, for picking.

Les thinks that our season for berries will be over by Saturday.  However, there will still be blackberries if anyone is still wanting them in the next few weeks!

Another Saturday Done...

We had a big day this morning!  By 7:10 a.m. there were about 40 cars that had pulled in to begin picking.  We then opened the patch up the hill and parked another 30 cars and managed to get the fields picked clean.

This week we picked on Tuesday and Saturday and plan to do the same thing next week.  If you're still looking for blueberries or blackberries, come check it out next week.  After these two pickings we'll be down to the last bit with maybe another picking or two in the valley after that.  See you soon!

Good Weather

It was good weather for picking berries today.  All three types of berries were picked, with raspberries the easiest to find.  I think 65 pints of raspberries were picked in the upper patch and quite a few were picked in the lower field.

The blackberries went to the people that arrived first.  We really only have 3 long rows of blackberries, so it's always on the basis of "first come, first served."

Our blueberry crop seems slim this year.  Last fall's drought caused a lot of bushes to die and our upper patch, especially, needs to be replanted.  Les is thinking about digging up the blueberries that aren't doing well, and replanting 1 1/2 acre with some blackberries.  It would take blueberries around 7 years to be up to full production, so it's a bit of a problem to correct the low production of the bushes.

Well, you're probably wondering about when we're picking again.  We're planning to be open for picking next Saturday, June 9, 7:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.  To tell the truth, the picking probably is only good from 7 - 8:30 a.m.  After 8:30 a.m., it's hard to find a good spot to pick.  See you soon!
